A chin augmentation surgery is also referred to as Mentoplasty. This is a plastic surgery procedure that is designed to permanently augment the size of the chin with the help of chin implants. Surgeons recommend Rhinoplasty with chin augmentation for achieving the best facial balance. For undergoing this procedure one has to be physically fit. It is best for those whose chins lack in projection.
How is the procedure carried out?
The chin augmentation procedure is carried out under sedation. The surgeon administers the same through the vein and once it is stopped, the patient wakes up with very little side effects.
The chin implant is placed through an external incision under the chin which is approximately 1.5 cm in length and is an inverted v-shape. The implant is placed externally rather than through the mouth as there is less bacteria on the surface of the skin. With less bacteria present, chances of infection are reduced. Also, for placing the implant, the pocket has to be bigger too. If the pocket is larger then the implant will migrate upward and that might give an unnatural look. Also, chances of facial musculature can also get damaged if the implant is placed from the mouth.
The chin implants are placed under the bone-periosteum. The periosteum is a dense layer of tissue that is tightly adhered to the bone. After placing the implant the surgeon secures it with a 6 month dissolving stitch allowing the periosteum to shrink around the implant. After a certain time passes, the implant is completely secured and does not get dislodged easily.
Recovery after the Chin Augmentation
The chin implants are put deep inside the jaw so there is no bruising. Swelling is common in the first 3 to 5 days. You will notice a certain exaggeration of the chin and stiffness of the lower lip. There is some jowling of the cheeks as well. The swelling decreases to a certain extent and by the end of 10 days the swelling is substantially reduced. It takes at least 3 months for the swelling to go away completely.
Chin augmentation women are not complex procedure. There is not much complications involved. Chances of infections cannot be completely ruled out and if unfortunately it does happen, then the implants have to be removed. For any discomfort, one can easily speak with the surgeon for solutions.
